Be careful if you don’t want your web habits broadcast online for all to see. Tighten up your computer virus security, and don’t download “free” music and games, and don’t rely on Norton or McAfee to save you.

The BBC reports that a new kind of spyware infects computers using p2ps and file-share sites then publishes the person’s internet history on a very public website before asking money for its removal.

Website Yomiuri claims that 5500 people have so far been blackmailed after being infected.

I wonder how much the unfortunate users paid to remove their name and internet history from the site. This seems like a disturbing and evil new twist to viruses and spyware and like any new virus idea will probably be copied by other virus creators. And while this blackmail virus is only limited to people who have downloaded a free game or music from a Japan-based site, others may be more broad.

If you are worried about your computer’s security–and your own privacy– now might be the time to make sure you’re as safe as possible. Read Ducktoes virus prevention tutorial and uninstall your p2ps for awhile at least.

And if you’re already infected bring your computer into our computer repair shop. We can remove the viruses without removing your photos, music and business data.

People often think that if they have an antivirus software such as Norton they are safe against malware. This is a dangerous misconception that creates a lot of work (and $!!!) for techies like Ms. Ducktoes.

Most anti-virus programs fight only viruses and provide very poor protection for the increasingly dangerous and sophisticated malware and spyware on the web.

It never hurts to have more than one antispyware. Thousands of malware and spyware are developed for the first time or re-versioned everyday (to elude detection) and no one antispyware can catch it all.

If you want real time, effective protection that just runs automatically on your computer without effort or knowledge on your part, then buy Spyware Doctor. Otherwise you need to run many antispyware and learn how to use them.

Below are the best ones for you to try:

MalwarebytesAntiMalware – Malwarebytes removes most malware quite effectively. Many techs now use it as their first defence against difficult spyware.

My son at university called and asked how he could remove some bad malware that his antivirus and anti-spyware couldn’t catch or remove. His computer was so bad he was thinking of reformating his drive. I told him to try Malwarebytes, and it fixed the problem.

I’ve used it against a bad case of Windows XP AntiVirus 2008. I had to use it in combination with other anti-spyware applications, but it did most of the work.

Dr. Web CureIt

This is a feisty little program that got rid of some potent meanies on clients’ machines. I encountered it in my search to find effective anti-spyware solutions for some of the BAD malware out there. It seemed quite useful against Windows XP Antivirus 2008/2009. Dr. Web Cureit is created by a Russian company and is endorsed by the Ministry of the Defence of the Russian Federation. Now there’s an endorsement most antispywares can’t claim.

SuperAntiSpyware

Whoa. This one really caught a lot on the spyware tests I put it through.

“What’s the difference is between spyware and viruses?” people often ask.

A virus is vandalism. Or rather self-perpetuating vandalism. it doesn’t really do anything for anyone, including it’s creators. No one makes money on viruses. A virus just breaks into a computer and makes a big mess. It writes grafitti of code all over your data and registry. It damages computers by smashing your OS against the wall, so to speak. It also spreads. But no one makes a profit on it. It’s a waste of everyone’s time and energy.

On the other hand, spyware (including adware and trojan horses) can make money for its creators. Profit’s its aim. It spies on your computer–and therefore, you–trying to get credit card numbers or bank account numbers and passwords. Maybe it forces you (hijacks your browser) to go to a bogus search engine, so instead of Google or Yahoo or Live Search, only the Adware’s ineffective Search Engine, and all its advertisers will open. Your computer and you are therefore captives to the bogus search engine’s ads. Or with less malicious forms, it just collects information on your interests and sends you ads, specialized just for you. Or in the case of rogue anti-spyware, it pretends to be a legitimate anti-virus or anti-spyware, trying to get you to buy it, but really doesn’t work against any viruses or spyware, except ones that it deposited into your computer.

In the case of Windows XP Antivirus 2008/2009, it seems to be a combination of spyware and virus. It not only floods your computer with spyware and steals your credit card numbers, it also behaves like a virus and returns after you think you’ve gotten rid of it. It also, left untreated, trashes your computer like a virus. It’s a nasty.

I hope this makes things clearer.

Now be good little duckies and never go without anti-spyware and anti-virus protection…And stay away from porn sites and P2Ps, where you’re guaranteed to pick up terrible computer diseases. If you must go to porn sites, at least practice safe computer sex and use top of the line anti-spyware protection such as Spyware Doctor. Even if you never go to dangerous sites, your computer can pick up spyware almost anywhere and that is why anti-spyware is necessary for all computer. And for those who can’t live with a free P2P please use this one.

Clients and friends (a recent one is my friend Joyce) often ask me three questions, “(1)Just who are these people who spend their time creating malware and spyware?” And this is usually followed quickly by, (2)”Don’t they have anything better to do?‚”and “(3)Why do they do it?” Now, after a recent article in the Calgary Herald by Jan Ravensbergen of Canwest News Sevice, I can give you three more concrete answers.

1. 17 kids from Quebec. 2. Obviously not. 3. For the money.

The 17 kids were from Quebec aged 17 to 25, all male but for one 19-year-old female. They were computer-savvy young adults who took over 1 million computers in 100 different countries. They turned these computers into very, slow unresponsive “zombies” they commanded for their own ends: identity theft, data theft, and fraud. They put the zombies on a botnet, which makes these youthful perpetrators “zombie herders.”

Botnets are big networks of the zombie computers which are herded or commanded to perform various illegal tasks such as sending spam e-mails; collecting and storing private data such credit card numbers, account numbers, and passwords; or serving pornography.

You’ve probably received a phish e-mail purporting to be from Paypal, e-bay, or a bank or other financial institution. If you clicked on a link in the e-mail, it took you to a fake or “phish” website that looked like the real thing, Paypal or a bank etc., but actually, was a phony copycat. If you were unfortunate enough to have typed in your data, it gave whatever you typed such as your user id or account number and passwords to the people running the botnet.

Trojan horses and worms are usually the means to taking over computers, so it is imperative that you run both anti-spyware and anti-virus software on your system. Many people believe they are safe if they run anti-virus software alone, but the zombie herding used by the 17 kids and other computer fraudsters, is mostly carried out with Trojan horses, a form of spyware. So you need the anti-spyware.

Prevention is so much cheaper and easier than reformatting your hard drive and dealing with identity theft and fraud. So don’t wait until its too late, install anti-spyware and anti-virus software today!! If you live in Calgary, Ducktoes can help you do it. Or you can learn how to do it yourself.

Pornography can be an addiction. It is also a multi-billion dollar big business. Pornographers are always trying to find new recruits online. Hoping to suck in more and more customers, they use adware, spyware, and malware to serve pornography to unsuspecting computer users and entice them into their expensive boudoir. One way they do this is called cyber-squatting. According to Jerry Rupelato in his article “Tricks Pornographers Play” pornographers purchase domain names that sound like legitimate sites offering information about various topics. You think you are going to a site to learn about hotels in Germany, for instance, and instead find–you guessed it–graphic pornography. A well-known example of this, according to Rupelato, is whitehouse.com. I remember this example from my days as an Educational Computer Strategist in Clark County School District. Teachers who told their students to research for facts about the President or executive branch of government would be shocked to find the kids had found pornography instead. This didn’t happen in the school’s computer labs because Clark County had strong, effective filters. But it did happen at home. Parents can also purchase filters for their home computers.

A couple of months ago, I came across a pornography netbot. It was exciting–and scary–to see. Right here in Calgary a computer on was on an illegal botnet. Without my client’s knowledge or permission, her computer had turned into a zombie. It was serving pornography to the netbot’s customers at the expense of my client. As a zombie, her unresponsive and super slow computer was useless to her. It was part of a netbot, a group of computers networked together for an illicit purpose, in this case to serve porn photos. The computer was so tortuously slow it was taking more than ten minutes to get on the internet or use other programs. The client hired me to help. She didn’t know what was going on except that her computer was full of junk. She was a very nice and interesting woman, a Calgary entrepreneur and artist, and a victim of some not-so-nice online criminals.

This happened because of malware. An stealth-installed program had compromised the computer’s security. The computer file sharing was turned on. All the computer’s resources were being used up with the botnet’s processes. A shared folder had .zip files that were full of porn. They had names like hotbabelick.zip. The virus software had been rendered ineffective. The anti-spyware I used also didn’t work well at first. I tried to turn off the processes in Windows Task Manager but an error message popped up saying I didn’t have the authority to stop the process.

I did manage to stop enough processes to allow the virus software to start working. By the time I left, the computer was much faster. And after I left the client told me that Spybot and Ad-Aware had removed the botnet programs.

What works best in a case like this, is to take the computer’s hard drive out and attach it to a computer in my lab and run the virus and spyware removal programs without the operating system which is repressing the virus and spyware programs.

If you have spyware or malware, I can help. Call (403) 287-0105.
